"My job also includes some line management of colleagues and I find this particular aspect of my role varied and rewarding" Suzanne

I joined AstraZeneca a few years ago and work at the Avlon site just outside of Bristol. I came directly from Edinburgh University where I did my PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry as well as an MSc by research and a BSc. I chose to join AstraZeneca as an Analytical Chemist, as I felt that I was more interested in this area.

My PhD involved a lot of problem solving using analytical techniques. Hands on experience gained during my PhD had already given me a lot of knowledge in this area and there were a lot of opportunities in Edinburgh for further training. I applied directly to the department that I was interested in and came here for interview towards the end of my PhD.

My current role involves leading the analytical support for new drug development projects, for which I employ techniques such as HPLC, LCMS and GC. My job also includes some line management of colleagues and I find this particular aspect of my role varied and rewarding. My working day generally involves some time in the lab with the remainder in the office. NMR is my specific area of expertise and this provides a lot of diversity in my work, as I need to balance provision of expert support for this facility with my responsibility for leading project support.

My NMR responsibilities can involve dealing with queries about the instrument, or specific spectra, to dealing with breakdowns and structural elucidation of potentially complex, or unknown compounds. Within a month of starting at AZ, I was personally involved in the installation of the first NMR system at this site. This was particularly challenging for me, but provided an excellent introduction to my specialist role at Avlon.

Because I work on a small site, travel to other AZ UK sites is often essential for project meetings and exchange of expertise. I have also travelled to Sweden a couple of times. These trips are incredibly useful, but they often involve long days of travelling.

All scientists join the company on the scientific ladder and I will soon have to decide whether I want to stay on this career path, or move into line or project management. Whatever choice I make for the future, Ive been very happy with my decision to join AZ at Avlon.
