About Biologists
Biologists identify aspects of a disease that a new medicine could potentially tackle. They also test new chemical compounds to find out how effective they are in both artificial and living systems.
"As a Biologist I follow a new medicine all the way from suggesting what might work in a particular disease, up to testing medicines in volunteers. I find that hugely satisfying."
What does the job involve?
Biologists can be involved in all aspects of the discovery of a new medicine. This can involve cell biologists, microbiologists, and molecular biologists. Biologists need to understand as much as possible about diseases in order to identify potential targets in the search for new medicines. A target is a specific aspect of a disease that a chemical compound might be able to modify. Once medicinal chemists have created new compounds, biologists then test them using computer systems, cell culture techniques and, if appropriate, animals. Finally, having thoroughly tested the safety of a compound, Biologists test it on human volunteers and patients.
What kind of qualifications do I need?
Biology is a multi-discipline area in the pharmaceutical industry and so the qualifications you'll need will depend on what area you want to join. Typically, you will need good science A-levels, with maths and English GCSEs and, in some cases, computer skills. These will enable you to take a degree in your chosen biology discipline and enter AstraZeneca as a graduate. We're also looking for the right personality as well as paper qualifications - creative problem solvers who can apply their scientific knowledge to our research programmes.
What kind of career opportunities will I enjoy?
You'll have the opportunity to develop both your personal and professional skills through a combination of 'on the job' training and external courses. You'll also be able to attend presentations made by colleagues and later, make your own presentations in a friendly environment. A few years down the line, you may be responsible for an entire area of research.
Where can I work
We need Biologists at both R&D Charnwood in Leicestershire and R&D Alderley Park in Cheshire.
